How to check the status of your tax refund from the Netherlands

Have you applied for a tax refund from the Netherlands? Did you do it yourself or used the services of tax consulting agencies? Now you want to know at what stage your application is and when you can expect to get paid? Here you will learn all about it, especially how to check the status of your Dutch tax refund.

Who can get a tax refund and when?

Let's start with what is most important, that is, under what circumstances you can receive a tax refund for working in the Netherlands. You can apply for such a refund up to 5 years back, i.e. in 2023 you can apply for a tax refund for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. The last day to apply for a tax refund from 2018 will be December 31, 2023. In order for your Dutch tax application to be processed at all by the local tax authority (Belastingdienst), it is necessary to correctly fill out the documents for a Dutch tax refund and, most importantly, attach the jaaropgave, i.e. the Dutch annual tax card.

What are the deadlines for Dutch tax refunds?

What deadlines apply to those who want to recover tax overpaid in the Netherlands? A tax return from the Netherlands must be filed between January 1 and March 3. Assuming all documents are filled out correctly and no attachments are missing, the Belastingdienst has until the last day of June to pay out the overpaid tax.

But what happens if for some reason we are late in submitting the necessary documents by March 31? We will still receive a refund, but we will have to wait longer for it. This is because in such cases the time in which the Belastingdienst should pay the money is extended. According to Dutch law, it will have from six months to up to three years to do so. It is worth noting at this point that this 3 years is calculated from the date of filing the tax return. However, we have good news - even if you apply for a tax refund after March 31, the funds are usually paid out after just 3 to 4 months.

So how do you check the status of your Dutch tax refund?

The best method is to watch your account while waiting for the money to arrive. You can also wait for possible contact from the office, which could indicate that something is missing from the documents. However, if you don't hear from anyone, you can safely assume that the application is complete and properly filled out, and all that remains is to wait patiently. By arranging a tax refund from the Netherlands through tax offices, we further increase the chance of a quick payment. Why? Because such companies are experienced in such matters and immediately submit complete and well-filled applications, avoiding delays in sending missing documents or filing corrections.
